7 Signs Your Brakes Need Replacing Right Now

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Here are 7 warning signs you should never ignore:

1. Squealing or Screeching Noise Brake pads have a wear indicator — a small metal tab that squeals when pads get thin. This is the earliest warning. Don't wait for it to progress.

2. Grinding Sound When Braking Grinding means metal-on-metal contact. Your pads are gone and the caliper is now cutting into the rotor. This is expensive and dangerous. Act immediately.

3. Vehicle Pulls to One Side If your car pulls left or right when braking, a caliper may be sticking or a brake hose could be blocked. This dramatically increases stopping distance on one side.

4. Brake Pedal Pulsation A vibrating pedal usually means warped rotors. This is common after hard stops or driving through water after heavy braking. Rotors need resurfacing or replacement.

5. Soft or Spongy Pedal If you're pressing the pedal closer to the floor than usual, you likely have air in the brake lines or a fluid leak. This is a serious safety issue — don't drive until it's fixed.

6. Brake Warning Light Your vehicle's ABS or brake warning light is on. Always have this diagnosed — it could be low fluid, a sensor, or a real system failure.

7. Burning Smell While Driving A sharp chemical smell after driving could indicate overheated brakes — common if a caliper is stuck. Pull over safely and let the brakes cool before continuing.
